Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) makes your information clear, authoritative, structured, and useful enough to be the direct answer when someone asks a question, whether in a Google featured snippet or People Also Ask box, a voice assistant, or an AI-generated response. It is for businesses whose customers ask specific questions before they buy, and whose pages currently bury the answer or never state it at all. AEO is not FAQ schema; it is a way of writing and organizing pages. Fix Website Issues delivers it on a repaired technical foundation as part of search and AI optimization.
Question Research From Real Buyer Language | Technical SEO First | Houston-Based, Nationwide | Since 2013
The specific questions buyers ask before choosing a provider in your category.
Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, AI Overviews, Copilot, ChatGPT.
Question research, direct answers, evidence, entity clarity. Schema only where content supports it.
Search Console query data, snippet and PAA tracking, AI prompt tests, referral analytics.
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring information so that a search engine, voice assistant, or AI system can identify a page’s direct answer to a specific question, judge it trustworthy, and present it, while the page remains useful to the human reading it. It focuses on question intent, concise direct answers, supporting evidence, clear entities, and page structure. Technical SEO remains the prerequisite, because an answer that cannot be crawled and indexed cannot be surfaced anywhere.
AEO is often reduced to “add FAQ schema.” That misses the point. Schema describes content; it does not create it, and Google has made clear that structured data must match what visitors see and that no markup is required for AI features. What earns an answer placement is the writing: a heading that matches the question, a first sentence that answers it completely, conditions and exceptions stated plainly, and a credible source or credential behind it. The same passage that wins a featured snippet is the passage an AI Overview or Copilot response will draw on, which is why AEO and Generative Engine Optimization overlap so heavily.
AEO is the content-structure layer. GEO addresses being the trusted, cited source for broader composed answers. ChatGPT SEO applies both to one platform. All of them start with an AI Visibility Audit so the questions worth owning are chosen from evidence rather than guesswork.
Structured data tells a machine “this is a question and this is its answer.” It does not make the answer good, specific, or trustworthy, and engines evaluate the visible text, not the markup. A vague answer with perfect schema loses to a precise answer with none. We add FAQ or other schema only after the visible content earns it.
AEO fits businesses where the purchase is preceded by questions: how much, how long, does it hurt, is it covered, what happens if, which one is right for me. The more of those questions a business can answer credibly, the more often it is the source an engine chooses.
Medical, dental, and specialty practices. Patients ask about procedures, recovery, cost ranges, insurance, and risks. Practices that answer those plainly, with a named clinician behind the answer, earn snippets and AI placements; practices that only list services do not.
Law firms. “Can I sue for…”, “how long do I have to…”, “what is the penalty for…” are answer queries. Precise, jurisdiction-specific answers with statutory grounding win them.
Home services and contractors. Pricing ranges, timelines, permits, materials, and “repair or replace” decisions are the questions that precede a call.
Ecommerce and SaaS. Compatibility, sizing, setup, comparisons, and troubleshooting questions decide purchases and reduce support load when answered on the page.
Businesses with strong rankings but weak feature ownership. Ranking third for a question while a competitor holds the snippet and the AI Overview is a structural problem AEO solves directly.
Optimize now if your site is technically healthy and the questions in your category are being answered by competitors or by generic sources.
Audit first if you do not know which questions matter or who currently owns them. The AI Visibility Audit maps that.
A site with crawl blocks, rendering problems, or security issues is repaired first by our website repair and technical SEO team. If the goal is being the cited source for broad topics rather than specific questions, GEO is the better frame. If the goal is Google’s AI features specifically, see Google AI Optimization.
AEO problems are content-structure problems. The information often exists somewhere; it is just not where or how an engine can use it.
Three paragraphs of preamble before the number, the timeline, or the yes/no. Fix: restructure so the direct answer is the first sentence under a heading that matches the question.
Pages address what the business wants to say, not what buyers ask. Fix: question research from Search Console queries, PAA data, sales-call notes, and AI prompt tests, then a question-to-page map.
“It depends” with nothing after it. Fix: give the typical answer first, then the conditions that change it. Engines and readers both need the specific case before the caveats.
Anonymous content with no author, credential, or basis. Fix: attribute answers to a named practitioner or the company, state the basis, and keep Person and Organization details consistent across the web.
A 40-question FAQ page with no depth, competing with itself. Fix: group questions by intent, give important ones their own section or page, and link them into the cluster.
PDFs, images, accordions loaded by script, chatbot flows. Fix: put the answer in crawlable HTML text on the relevant page; keep the PDF as a download, not the source.
AEO is mostly research and writing, with technical and measurement work around it. Technical items are implemented by the team that handles SEO repair and website maintenance.
Before writing anything, we find out which questions matter, who owns them today, and whether the site can technically be the answer. The output is a question map with owners and a prioritized plan.
From the inventory, select the questions that precede a purchase and that a competitor or generic source currently answers. Usually 20 to 60 for a service business.
Confirm the answer pages are crawlable, render their text without scripts, and are indexed on Google and Bing. Nothing else proceeds until this passes.
Each question gets a heading, a direct answer in the first one or two sentences, the conditions that change it, the evidence or basis, who is answering, and a next step. Typical answers first, exceptions after.
Answers are attributed to a named practitioner or the company. Names, credentials, and business details are aligned across the site, profiles, and directories so the source is recognizable.
Related questions are grouped into sections or pages, linked to the services they lead to, and, where the visible content supports it, marked up with FAQ, HowTo, Person, or Organization schema.
Snippet and PAA ownership, Search Console question queries, and monthly AI prompt tests are tracked per question. Answers that are not winning are rewritten based on what the winning answer does differently.
Start from what people actually ask. The best question sources are Search Console, the sales inbox, and the front desk. We collect those before touching keyword tools, because the phrasing customers use is the phrasing engines match.
Typical case first, caveats second. Professionals instinctively hedge. Engines and readers both need the usual answer stated plainly, then the exceptions. We write it that way and, in regulated fields, review wording with the client for accuracy.
Visible content earns the markup. We have removed more FAQ schema from client sites than we have added, usually because it described content that was not on the page or was too thin to deserve it. Schema follows the writing.
Answers on a broken site do not count. Our repair background means the technical check is not a formality. A meaningful share of “we never get the snippet” cases are pages whose answer text loads only after JavaScript runs.
Same foundation, different unit of work: SEO optimizes a page for a query; AEO optimizes a passage for a question.
| Area | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of work | A page targeting a query | A passage answering a question |
| Where it shows | Ranked results, local pack | Featured snippets, PAA, voice, AI Overviews, Copilot, ChatGPT responses |
| Typical work | Technical fixes, keyword pages, links | Question research, direct answers, attribution, structure, selective schema |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks | Feature ownership per question, question-query impressions, AI answer source |
| Best use case | Competitive commercial keywords | Question-driven purchases and support deflection |
| Limitations | Ranking does not guarantee the answer slot | Answer features can be zero-click; engines choose sources without disclosure |
Situation. A two-location dental practice ranks well for its name and “dentist near me” but a dental directory and a national chain own the snippets and AI answers for “how much does a crown cost,” “does a root canal hurt,” and “how long do veneers last.”
Likely findings. Procedure pages list services with no answers; the FAQ page has 35 one-line answers with FAQ schema and no attribution; dentist names are formatted three ways across the site and insurance directories; a script-loaded accordion hides the little answer text that exists.
Sequence. Fix rendering and confirm indexing (week 1). Build a 40-question inventory from Search Console, PAA, AI prompt tests, and the front desk (week 1). Rewrite each procedure page with answer-first sections attributed to the treating dentist, with cost ranges, timelines, and conditions stated plainly and reviewed by the practice (weeks 2 to 5). Align dentist and practice entities; add Person and Dentist schema that matches (weeks 2 to 4). Track ownership per question monthly.
Measurement. Snippet and PAA ownership for the 40 questions, question-query impressions, AI answer source logs. This describes structure, not results; outcomes vary and are not guaranteed.
We can map the questions in your category, show who owns each answer today, and tell you what it would take to change that, before any writing starts.

AEO is the practice of structuring information so a search engine, voice assistant, or AI system can identify a page’s direct answer to a specific question, judge it trustworthy, and present it, while the page stays useful to human readers.
SEO optimizes a page for a query and measures rankings. AEO optimizes a passage for a question and measures whether that passage is chosen as the answer in snippets, PAA, voice, or AI responses. AEO depends on SEO’s technical foundation.
No. Schema describes content; it does not create or improve it. Engines evaluate the visible text. We add FAQ or HowTo markup only when the page content already earns it, and we remove markup that describes thin or absent content.
Featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistant responses, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, and assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity when they answer a specific question.
No. Google and other engines choose answer sources without disclosing why, and features vary by location, device, and wording. We track ownership per question and revise based on what the winning answer does; we do not promise placements.
From Search Console queries phrased as questions, People Also Ask boxes for your topics, AI prompt tests, and the questions your sales and support staff hear every day. The customer’s phrasing is what engines match.
Sometimes. Being the answer can mean the user never clicks, which is why we measure conversions and AI referrals alongside feature ownership, and why answers end with a clear next step.
Because engines and AI systems evaluate who is behind an answer. A named practitioner with consistent credentials across the web is a stronger source than anonymous text, especially for health, legal, and financial questions.
AEO focuses on specific questions and direct answers. GEO focuses on being the trusted, cited source for broader composed answers. They overlap heavily and are usually done together.
Technical fixes take effect within days of a re-crawl. Snippet and PAA ownership can shift within weeks of a rewrite; AI answer sources take longer and vary by platform. These are estimates, not guarantees.
