ChatGPT Visibility

ChatGPT SEO Services

ChatGPT SEO is the work of making your website and brand discoverable, clearly understood, and worth referencing when ChatGPT answers a question in your category. It is for businesses whose customers now ask an assistant for a recommendation before they ever open Google, and who find competitors named instead of them. There is no submission form and no way to buy a mention; what can be improved is crawler access, indexing, content clarity, entity consistency, and third-party corroboration. Fix Website Issues handles those as a website repair and technical SEO team, as part of a broader AI search strategy.

What It Addresses

Businesses absent from ChatGPT answers, described incorrectly, or losing recommendations to competitors.

What We Work With

OpenAI's crawlers, the web index behind ChatGPT search, Bing Webmaster Tools, and your own site.

How It Is Measured

A fixed prompt set re-run monthly, referral traffic from chatgpt.com, and Bing citation data. Observations, not rankings.

What It Is Not

No control over OpenAI's models or outputs. We improve access, clarity, and corroboration; we do not promise mentions.

Definition

What Is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is the practice of improving the discoverability, clarity, authority, and reference-worthiness of a website and brand so that ChatGPT is more likely to find, understand, and mention the business when users ask for information or recommendations in its category. It is a specialization within AI Search Optimization rather than a separate discipline, because most of what influences ChatGPT is the same public, crawlable information that influences Bing and Google.

How ChatGPT finds website information

ChatGPT draws on two sources. The first is what the underlying model learned during training, which reflects how a brand was described across the public web up to a cutoff date. The second, and for local or niche queries the more important one, is live web search: ChatGPT runs queries, reads the pages it retrieves, and summarizes what they say. OpenAI operates separate crawlers for these purposes. OAI-SearchBot supports ChatGPT search results, ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user’s request requires it, and GPTBot collects data that may be used for training. Each can be allowed or blocked independently in robots.txt.

Two consequences follow. A business cannot edit what a model already learned, but it can control whether its current pages are accessible and what they say. And because ChatGPT search relies on a web index rather than a private directory, the businesses it names are largely the ones that are already well indexed, clearly described, and corroborated by other sources. Strong Bing indexing has mattered more than most business owners expect; a site with good Google rankings and a thin Bing footprint often goes unmentioned.

We do not speculate about OpenAI’s proprietary ranking or selection logic. What is published in OpenAI’s crawler documentation, what can be observed by running the same prompts repeatedly, and what Bing Webmaster Tools reports is enough to work from.

Mention vs. citation

ChatGPT may mention a business by name without linking to it, or it may cite a specific page as a source. Both count as visibility. Only the citation sends traffic, and it often goes to a directory page about you rather than your own site unless your page is the clearest source available.

ChatGPT SEO works on both: being named, and being the page that gets linked.

Who It Is For

Who Needs ChatGPT SEO

The common thread is a purchase decision that now starts with a question to an assistant rather than a keyword in a search box. That changes which businesses get considered.

Local service and professional businesses. “Who should I call for X near me” is one of the most frequent recommendation prompts. Plumbers, remodelers, HVAC companies, auto shops, attorneys, and accountants compete on whether ChatGPT can confirm what they do and where, not on slogans.

Medical and dental practices. Patients ask for a specialist by procedure, insurance, and city. Practices whose provider names, locations, and services differ across the website and directories get skipped or described with stale information. Our SEO work for physicians and dental groups makes this a pattern we see often.

Companies with strong Google rankings and no AI presence. The most frequent case. Usually a crawler block, a weak Bing index, or pages that say very little in readable text.

Businesses being described incorrectly. When ChatGPT states an old address, a service you no longer offer, or a former brand name, the fix is on the web, not inside OpenAI. That is an entity cleanup job.

Brands whose competitors are consistently named. If the same two or three rivals appear for every query, they have solved retrieval and corroboration. Competitor citation analysis shows exactly which sources are doing the work for them.

Signs Your Business May Need ChatGPT SEO

  • Asking ChatGPT for a provider in your category and city returns competitors, not you.
  • ChatGPT gets your address, services, hours, or name wrong.
  • Analytics shows no referral sessions from chatgpt.com despite solid Google traffic.
  • A search for your site on Bing returns few pages or outdated titles.
  • Your key facts live in images, PDFs, or sliders rather than readable text.
  • A security plugin, firewall, or CDN was installed and nobody checked its bot rules.

When to start elsewhere

A hacked, broken, or half-migrated site is repaired first; our technical website repair services handle that. If you have never measured AI visibility on any platform, the AI Visibility Audit is the right first step rather than a ChatGPT-only effort. And if the real goal is Google’s AI features, Google AI Optimization is the more direct service.

The Problems ChatGPT SEO Solves

Each of these has shown up repeatedly in client audits. The fix is listed with the symptom so the work is concrete.

Problem

OpenAI’s crawler is blocked

Security plugins, CDN bot rules, and copied robots.txt files often block OAI-SearchBot along with everything that is not Googlebot. Fix: allow search crawlers explicitly, verify with fetch tests, decide separately on GPTBot.

Problem

Thin or missing Bing index

Sites optimized only for Google frequently have no Bing Webmaster Tools verification, no submitted sitemap, and unresolved Bing crawl errors. Fix: verify, submit, resolve, and claim Bing Places with details matching your Google Business Profile.

Problem

Pages say nothing quotable

A homepage of slogans and a services page of icons gives ChatGPT nothing to repeat. Fix: service pages that state what, where, for whom, process, and proof in the first paragraph, with FAQs written in the language buyers actually use.

Problem

Conflicting brand information

A DBA on the site, a legal name on directories, an old address on a forgotten profile. ChatGPT either merges them wrongly or picks the wrong one. Fix: one canonical name, address, phone, and description everywhere, plus Organization schema with sameAs links.

Problem

Nothing corroborates the site

Few reviews, no directory presence, no association listings, no press. ChatGPT has no second source to confirm the first. Fix: a reference strategy built around the sources ChatGPT is already citing for your competitors.

Problem

A directory gets the link instead of you

ChatGPT names you but cites Yelp or a listing site. Fix: make your own service page the most complete, current, and specific source, so it becomes the page worth linking.

What Is Included in ChatGPT SEO

Scope is set after the review, but the work is always drawn from these four groups. Every item produces something you can inspect: a fetch log, a findings document, a rewritten page, a listing corrected.

Technical items are implemented directly by the same team that handles WordPress error repair and ongoing website maintenance, so crawler and rendering fixes do not wait on a third-party developer.

Access and indexing

  • robots.txt, firewall, CDN, and security-plugin review for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, GPTBot, and Bingbot
  • Fetch tests as each crawler with results logged
  • Rendering check: does key text exist without JavaScript?
  • Bing Webmaster Tools verification, sitemap, crawl-error cleanup
  • Canonical, redirect, and duplicate-URL fixes

Research

  • ChatGPT visibility benchmark: 15 to 30 buyer-style prompts per service and market, recorded with responses
  • Competitor citation analysis: who is named, which pages and sources are cited
  • Prompt and question research to inform page content
  • Brand and entity consistency analysis across profiles and directories

Content and entity

  • Service and location page rewrites, answer-first
  • FAQ content built from real prompt language
  • Supporting guides that answer the questions buyers ask ChatGPT before choosing a provider
  • Organization / LocalBusiness schema with sameAs, matching visible content
  • Google Business Profile and Bing Places alignment

Authority and monitoring

  • Citation and reference opportunity list, prioritized by what ChatGPT already cites in your category
  • Review and brand-mention strategy
  • AI referral tracking in analytics (chatgpt.com and related sources)
  • Monthly prompt re-run with change log
  • Competitive monitoring and reporting

How We Evaluate ChatGPT Visibility Before Recommending Anything

The evaluation produces a written findings document. It answers one question first: can ChatGPT read your site at all? Everything else depends on that.

  1. Crawler access test. Key pages fetched as OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, and Bingbot; robots.txt and firewall rules reviewed.
  2. Rendering check. Confirm service and location text exists in the HTML, not only after scripts run.
  3. Bing index coverage. Verification status, indexed pages, crawl errors, and sitemap submission.
  4. Prompt benchmark. The same buyer-style questions run several times each; mentions, citations, and errors recorded.
  5. Accuracy review. What ChatGPT says about the business compared with reality, and where the wrong data originates.
  6. Competitor citation map. Which rivals are named and which sources ChatGPT links for them.
  7. Entity consistency. Name, address, phone, categories, and services across the site, Google, Bing, Apple, and industry directories.
  8. Content quotability. Can a page answer what, where, for whom, and why trust from its first paragraph?
  9. Corroboration inventory. Reviews, listings, associations, press, and mentions available to confirm the site.
  10. Prioritized roadmap. Findings ranked by impact and effort, access and indexing first.

How ChatGPT SEO Works, Step by Step

Five stages. Access and indexing come first because nothing downstream matters if ChatGPT cannot read the site.

Step 1

Baseline and Access

Record the prompt set, test every relevant crawler, verify Bing. Unblock what is blocked and log the before-and-after.

Step 2

Fix the Entity

Choose the canonical name, address, phone, and description. Correct every profile and directory. Add schema that matches.

Step 3

Make Pages Quotable

Rewrite service and location pages to answer the buyer’s question in the first paragraph, then add proof, process, and FAQs.

Step 4

Build Corroboration

Target the reviews, listings, and mentions ChatGPT already cites for competitors in your category, in priority order.

Step 5

Re-run and Adjust

Repeat the prompt set monthly, compare with referral and Bing data, and revise the roadmap based on what changed.

How Fix Website Issues Approaches ChatGPT Visibility

The approach is shaped by what we find when a client’s site is already broken in some way, which is how most engagements begin. Three working rules follow from that experience.

Assume nothing about access. The most common single finding in ChatGPT visibility reviews is a bot rule someone added for security reasons, often years ago, that blocks every crawler except Googlebot. It costs nothing to check and it explains a surprising share of “ChatGPT never mentions us” complaints.

Treat Bing as a first-class index. Because ChatGPT search has relied on a web index that overlaps heavily with Bing, we verify every client in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit sitemaps, and clear crawl errors before doing any content work. Bing Webmaster Tools also reports pages cited and grounding-query associations for Microsoft’s AI features, which is one of the few platform-provided measurements available; we use it as a signal, not as a ranking.

Write for the question, not the keyword. Prompts are longer and more specific than search queries: “a dentist in Pearland who takes my insurance and sees kids on Saturdays” rather than “pearland dentist.” Pages that answer the full question in readable text are the ones ChatGPT can summarize. That is also why our Answer Engine Optimization work overlaps with this service.

What we deliberately do not do: publish llms.txt files as if they were a ranking factor, add markup unsupported by visible content, or promise a mention. The whole practice rests on being accurate and easy to verify, and the agency’s own claims have to meet that bar too.

ChatGPT SEO vs Traditional SEO

Same foundation, different emphasis. Neither replaces the other.

Primary purposeRank pages for keywords in Google and BingBe found, understood, and named when ChatGPT answers a buyer's question

What ChatGPT SEO Cannot Guarantee

  • No agency controls ChatGPT’s responses, and no one can submit a business for inclusion.
  • The same prompt can return different businesses on different days, for different users, in different locations, or on a different model version.
  • What a model learned in training cannot be edited. Only current, public, crawlable information can be influenced.
  • Schema, llms.txt, or any markup does not cause ChatGPT to recommend a business.
  • OpenAI does not provide a public performance dashboard for ChatGPT. Measurement relies on repeatable prompt tests, referral analytics, and Bing’s data, which we report as observations.
  • Optimization improves eligibility, clarity, and corroboration. Mentions, citations, traffic, and leads are not promised.

How We Would Approach a Typical Home Services Company

Situation. A remodeling contractor with strong Google reviews and first-page rankings in its metro asks ChatGPT “best kitchen remodeler in [city]” and gets three competitors, one of which is smaller and newer.

Likely findings. A firewall rule blocking all non-Google bots since a 2023 attack; no Bing verification; service pages built as photo galleries with two sentences of text; the business listed under two slightly different names on Houzz, Yelp, and the BBB.

Sequence. Allow OAI-SearchBot and Bingbot, verify Bing, submit the sitemap (week 1). Choose one canonical name and correct every listing; add Organization schema with sameAs (weeks 1 to 3). Rewrite kitchen, bath, and whole-home pages to state scope, service area, typical timeline, licensing, and process in readable text; add FAQs from real prompt language (weeks 2 to 5). Pursue the two directories ChatGPT cited for competitors (ongoing).

Measurement. Twenty prompts re-run monthly, chatgpt.com referral sessions, Bing citation data. This describes how the work would be structured; results depend on the market and are not guaranteed.

Built on Technical SEO and Real Website Repair Experience

Fix Website Issues is the repair and technical SEO division of WevTEC in Houston, working on broken, hacked, slow, and poorly indexed websites since 2013. ChatGPT SEO grew out of that work because the first thing we check on any site, whether the complaint is a Google drop or an AI blind spot, is whether crawlers can reach it. That habit turns out to solve a large share of ChatGPT visibility problems on its own.

  • Crawler and rendering diagnosis is routine. We test as the actual user agents and keep the logs.
  • Fixes are made, not just recommended. WordPress, WooCommerce, and custom sites are edited directly by our team.
  • Experience with healthcare, legal, and local service businesses, where accuracy of names, credentials, and locations is not optional.
  • Bing is treated seriously, which most Google-only agencies skip and which matters disproportionately for ChatGPT.
  • Plain language about limits. If something cannot be measured or controlled, we say so.

ChatGPT SEO is the practice of making a website and brand discoverable, clearly understood, and worth referencing so ChatGPT is more likely to find and mention the business when users ask questions in its category. It builds on normal SEO with crawler access, entity consistency, answer-first content, and third-party corroboration.

Through two routes: what its model learned during training, and live web search using a web index and OpenAI’s own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. For local and specific questions, live search is what matters, which is why crawler access and Bing indexing are the first things to check.

You can make it far more likely by ensuring OpenAI’s search crawler can read your site, your pages are indexed, your business details are consistent everywhere, and other sources corroborate them. You cannot submit or pay for inclusion, and no one can force a mention.

No. ChatGPT search relies on web indexing, so the crawlable, indexable, useful pages that Google SEO requires are prerequisites. ChatGPT SEO adds emphasis on Bing, AI crawlers, entity clarity, and conversational content; it does not replace the foundation.

No. ChatGPT’s answers vary by prompt wording, user, location, session, and model version, and OpenAI does not offer any placement program. We measure against a baseline and report what changed. Anyone guaranteeing a ChatGPT recommendation is guessing.

Three ways, reported together: a fixed set of buyer-style prompts re-run monthly with mentions, citations, and errors logged; referral sessions from chatgpt.com in your analytics; and Bing Webmaster Tools citation data for Microsoft’s AI features. These are observations, not rankings.

When ChatGPT search retrieves a page, it reads the live content and may cite it. OAI-SearchBot supports that search function, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages on a user’s behalf. Whether your site is used depends on whether those crawlers can access it and whether the page is a clear match for the question.

Brands that are easy to find in a web index, describe themselves specifically and consistently, and are confirmed by other sources such as reviews, directories, associations, and press. Specific, verifiable statements beat slogans every time.

That is a business decision about model training, not about search visibility. GPTBot collects data that may be used for training; OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search. You can block the first and allow the second if you want to be found without contributing to training data.

Technical fixes such as unblocking crawlers take effect within days of a re-crawl. Entity cleanup takes a few weeks. Noticeable changes in how often a business is mentioned typically develop over several weeks to a few months, depending on competition. These are estimates, not guarantees.
