What Is Google AI Optimization?

Google AI Optimization is the work of making a website eligible for, and a strong candidate to be cited in, Google’s AI-powered search experiences, AI Overviews and AI Mode, by meeting the crawling, indexing, content-quality, structured-data, and page-experience standards Google publishes for Search generally. Google’s documentation on AI features is explicit that these experiences use the same core systems as Search and that no additional or special requirements exist. Optimizing for them means doing Search fundamentals unusually well and then making sure your pages are the clearest, most useful source for the queries where AI answers appear.

Two things follow from that. First, a site with crawl blocks, thin or duplicated content, misleading structured data, or slow, unstable pages is unlikely to be surfaced in an AI Overview no matter what else is done. Second, the tactics sold as “AI Overview hacks” (special files, special schema, keyword-stuffed summaries) are not supported by anything Google has published. We do not offer them. How AI Overviews and AI Mode choose what to show

Google states that AI features draw on its search index and ranking systems, may run several related queries behind the scenes, and link to supporting pages so users can learn more. Pages that answer a query directly, contain unique value, and come from a site Google already trusts are the natural candidates. The user’s location, query wording, language, and Google’s own decisions about when to show an AI answer all affect the result, which is why we speak of eligibility, not placement.

How Fix Website Issues Approaches Google’s AI Features

We read Google’s documentation, not rumors about it. Every recommendation on this page corresponds to a Search Central page we can point to. When Google says no special markup is needed, we do not sell special markup.

Displacement shows up in Search Console first. The clearest sign that AI answers are affecting a site is impressions holding or rising while clicks fall on the same queries. We look for that pattern before anything else, because it tells us which queries to prioritize.

Repair precedes optimization. Our clients often arrive after a migration or plugin conflict silently deindexed half the site. Content work on unindexed pages is wasted; we fix the foundation first and can show the before-and-after in the coverage report.

Example methodology, not a case study

How We Would Approach a Typical Home Services Company

Situation. A plumbing company in a large metro ranks in the top five for its main service queries, but Search Console shows clicks down over six months on the same queries while impressions are flat. AI Overviews now appear for most of them, citing a national lead-generation site and a manufacturer’s page.

Likely findings. Service pages are 200-word templates with the city name swapped; a caching plugin serves Googlebot a stale, script-heavy version; LocalBusiness schema lists a phone number the company stopped using; Core Web Vitals fail on mobile because of an oversized hero video; no page answers the “how much” and “how long” questions the AI answers address.

Sequence. Fix caching and rendering; correct schema; replace the hero video with an optimized image (week 1). Rewrite the six highest-impression service pages with real pricing ranges, timelines, process, and a named licensed plumber’s authorship (weeks 2 to 5). Build a cluster of question pages linked from the services. Align Business Profile and listings. Re-measure monthly.
