What Is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative Engine Optimization is a strategy for improving a website’s and brand’s ability to be discovered, understood, grounded, referenced, and cited in generative search environments, where an AI system composes an answer from retrieved sources rather than presenting a list of links. The term emerged from academic work on how generative engines select and attribute sources; in practice it means making your pages the kind of sources those systems prefer to draw on.

GEO does not replace SEO. Generative engines retrieve from web indexes, so a page must first be crawlable, indexable, and useful in the ordinary sense. What GEO adds is attention to three things classic SEO under-weights: whether a passage can stand alone as a clear, specific, verifiable answer; whether the entity behind the page is consistently described across the web; and whether outside sources corroborate the page strongly enough for an engine to treat it as reliable. Google’s own guidance for AI features says as much: the same fundamentals apply, with no special markup required.

GEO, SEO, and AEO in one sentence each

SEO earns a ranked link for a query. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) shapes content so a specific question gets a direct answer, in search features and AI responses alike. GEO works on being the retrieved, trusted, and cited source when a generative engine composes an answer. They stack; the comparison table further down shows where each one does its work. LLM Optimization sits underneath all three, dealing with what a model can learn about a brand from public information in the first place.

What “grounded” means

When a generative engine grounds an answer, it ties its statements to retrieved sources instead of relying only on what the model remembers. Being one of those sources is the goal of GEO. It requires the engine to have retrieved your page, understood it, and judged it reliable enough to build on.

GEO pays off where an AI-composed answer sits between the buyer and the decision. That is now most research-driven purchases, but the reason each business needs it differs.

Content-rich businesses that rank but are not cited. Publishers of guides, comparisons, and expertise whose pages appear in classic results yet are passed over when Google, Copilot, or Perplexity compose an answer. The issue is usually passage structure and corroboration, not rankings.

Healthcare, legal, and financial firms. Generative engines are cautious with these topics and lean on sources they can verify: named practitioners, credentials, consistent listings. Practices with that in place get grounded; practices without it get generic answers with a competitor’s name attached.

Ecommerce and product companies. Product pages built from manufacturer copy give an engine nothing distinctive. Specifications, comparisons, use cases, and honest limitations written in your own words are what get cited.

Multi-location and franchise businesses. Location pages that are near-duplicates confuse entity understanding. GEO for these businesses is largely entity work.

How Fix Website Issues Approaches GEO

Most GEO advice online is about content. Our starting point is different because of where our clients come from: sites we were hired to repair. Three principles follow.

Retrieval failures masquerade as content failures. A page that a generative engine never fetched will never be cited, no matter how well it is written. Before any passage is rewritten we confirm, with logged fetch tests, that Google, Bing, OpenAI, and Perplexity crawlers all receive the full text. A meaningful share of “our content is not cited” cases end here.

Specificity is the citation currency. Engines cite passages that make a concrete, checkable claim: a process with named steps, a number with a source, a limitation stated plainly. “Industry-leading solutions” is never cited. We rewrite toward statements a careful editor could verify, and we put the evidence in the same section rather than three scrolls away.

Corroboration is planned, not hoped for. Competitor citation analysis shows exactly which outside sources engines rely on in a category. Those become the reference targets, in priority order, instead of a generic link-building list.

What GEO Cannot Guarantee

  • No agency controls which sources a generative engine cites, or whether Google includes a page in an AI Overview or AI Mode response.
  • Citations change with the query wording, the user, the location, the session, and the model version.
  • No schema type, llms.txt file, or markup is required by any platform for AI features, and none causes a citation.
  • Not every platform reports citation data publicly. Some measurement depends on repeatable manual prompt tests, which we document as observations.
  • GEO improves eligibility, clarity, authority, and discoverability. Specific citations, rankings, traffic, or leads cannot be promised.

How We Would Approach a Typical Specialty Law Firm

Situation. A firm with a large library of practice-area articles ranks on page one for many of them, yet AI Overviews and Perplexity cite a legal directory and a national competitor when users ask how a specific type of claim works in its state.

Likely findings. Articles written as long narratives with no standalone, verifiable statements; attorneys named inconsistently across the site, the state bar listing, and directories; no Bing verification; a CDN rule throttling unknown crawlers.

Sequence. Confirm crawler access and verify Bing (week 1). Fix attorney and firm entity consistency; add Person and LegalService schema that matches the pages (weeks 1 to 3). Restructure the ten highest-value articles into sections that each state one specific point with its statutory or procedural basis beside it (weeks 2 to 6). Map the cluster and add internal links. Pursue the two bar-association and one editorial source the engines already cite (ongoing).
