The Importance of Transferring Online Assets When Selling or Transferring a Business
When a business is sold or transferred to new owners, the transition involves more than just the physical location, name, or licenses. In today’s digital age, the online establishment of a business is equally critical. This includes the transfer of websites, social media accounts, Google My Business (GMB) pages, and maintaining the established reputation. Here’s why these elements are vital and how they should be managed during the transition.
Ownership of Domain
Ensuring the smooth transfer of domain ownership is crucial for maintaining online presence without interruption. Here are the steps we’re taking:
Creating a GoDaddy Account:
-
- have to create an account on GoDaddy.com or Namecheap or Hostgator and share the ID and password with the current owner.
- The owner will then transfer the domain to our GoDaddy account or whatever created.
- After the transfer, we will have to change the password for security.
Using an Authorization Code:
- Alternatively, the current owner can unlock the domain and provide us with the authorization code.
- Will have to use this code to transfer the domain ownership to our GoDaddy account, a process that typically takes 5 to 7 days.
Retrieving Website Content:
- Suppose the existing owner has registered the domains https://abc.com and https://xyz.com with GoDaddy and hosted them on Namecheap.
- If they share the Namecheap/ hosting ID and password, we can access the existing website content.
- We need their authorization to use the previous content in our new design.
- We always recommend using GoDaddy’s Web Hosting Plus Grow package for hosting or any better hosting like this.
Google My Business Page
Maintaining control of our Google My Business (GMB) pages is essential for local SEO and customer engagement. Here’s how we plan to manage this:
        Transferring Email Addresses:
-
- Ideally, the current owner will transfer the email addresses used to create the GMB pages.
- Alternatively, they can transfer ownership to the new owner’s Gmail account and assign managerial access to [email protected].
Securing Primary Ownership:
- If the email addresses cannot be transferred, ensuring the primary ownership is transferred without future alterations is crucial.
- The primary ownership account must not be deleted or altered to prevent any damage to the GMB page.
Social Media
Access to social media accounts is vital for ongoing engagement and marketing. Here’s our approach:
Admin Access to Accounts:
-
- We require admin access to all social media accounts, including YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.
- If these accounts are linked to personal emails, we will have to establish a secure method to gain access and avoid future issues.

Why SEO Professionals Prefer Old Domains Over New Ones
SEO professionals prefer old domains and websites because they come with established authority, trust, and existing backlinks, which significantly boost their search engine rankings. New domains take time to rank due to the lack of history and trust signals that search engines like Google use to determine relevance and authority. Therefore, competition-based SEO strategies are adopted to effectively analyze and outperform competitors by leveraging proven tactics and optimizing content for high-intent keywords, accelerating the path to achieving top positions in search results.
Why New Websites and Content Take Time to Rank on Google
New websites or content take time to rank at the top of Google search results even with strong on-page and off-page SEO because search engines need to build trust and authority signals over time. Factors such as domain age, backlink history, and user engagement metrics gradually influence rankings. Typically, it can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months or longer for new content to establish a significant presence in search results, depending on the competition and the effectiveness of the SEO strategies employed.Â
By implementing this comprehensive strategy, we can effectively grow our online presence, attract more clients, and establish our business as a trusted provider in the community.
