Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) improves a brand’s ability to be discovered, understood, grounded, and cited by generative search systems such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. It is for businesses whose content already ranks yet is rarely the source an AI answer draws from, and for those whose competitors are cited instead. GEO does not replace SEO; it adds citation-worthiness on top of a sound technical foundation. Fix Website Issues delivers it as part of a wider AI visibility optimization practice rooted in website repair and technical SEO.
Technical Foundation First | Citation-Focused Content | Measured Across Platforms | Houston-Based, Nationwide Since 2013
Content that ranks but is never the source behind an AI-generated answer.

Generative Engine Optimization is a strategy for improving a website’s and brand’s ability to be discovered, understood, grounded, referenced, and cited in generative search environments, where an AI system composes an answer from retrieved sources rather than presenting a list of links. The term emerged from academic work on how generative engines select and attribute sources; in practice it means making your pages the kind of sources those systems prefer to draw on.
GEO does not replace SEO. Generative engines retrieve from web indexes, so a page must first be crawlable, indexable, and useful in the ordinary sense. What GEO adds is attention to three things classic SEO under-weights: whether a passage can stand alone as a clear, specific, verifiable answer; whether the entity behind the page is consistently described across the web; and whether outside sources corroborate the page strongly enough for an engine to treat it as reliable. Google’s own guidance for AI features says as much: the same fundamentals apply, with no special markup required.
SEO earns a ranked link for a query. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) shapes content so a specific question gets a direct answer, in search features and AI responses alike. GEO works on being the retrieved, trusted, and cited source when a generative engine composes an answer. They stack; the comparison table further down shows where each one does its work. LLM Optimization sits underneath all three, dealing with what a model can learn about a brand from public information in the first place.
When a generative engine grounds an answer, it ties its statements to retrieved sources instead of relying only on what the model remembers. Being one of those sources is the goal of GEO. It requires the engine to have retrieved your page, understood it, and judged it reliable enough to build on.
GEO pays off where an AI-composed answer sits between the buyer and the decision. That is now most research-driven purchases, but the reason each business needs it differs.
Content-rich businesses that rank but are not cited. Publishers of guides, comparisons, and expertise whose pages appear in classic results yet are passed over when Google, Copilot, or Perplexity compose an answer. The issue is usually passage structure and corroboration, not rankings.
Healthcare, legal, and financial firms. Generative engines are cautious with these topics and lean on sources they can verify: named practitioners, credentials, consistent listings. Practices with that in place get grounded; practices without it get generic answers with a competitor’s name attached.
Ecommerce and product companies. Product pages built from manufacturer copy give an engine nothing distinctive. Specifications, comparisons, use cases, and honest limitations written in your own words are what get cited.
Multi-location and franchise businesses. Location pages that are near-duplicates confuse entity understanding. GEO for these businesses is largely entity work.
Any brand whose competitors are the cited source. If the same rival is linked in every AI answer for your category, they have become the reference. Competitor citation analysis reveals which pages and which outside sources earned that position.
If the site has crawl errors, rendering problems, or is recovering from a hack or migration, that is repaired first by our website repair and SEO specialists. If you have no baseline of where you appear today, begin with the AI Visibility Audit. If the immediate concern is a single platform, ChatGPT SEO or Google AI Optimization is the more targeted route.
GEO problems tend to sit one layer above technical SEO: the page is reachable, but it is not the page an engine wants to build on.
The page is retrieved but a competitor’s is used. Fix: passage-level restructuring so each section makes one clear, verifiable claim an engine can lift, with supporting evidence next to it.
One page on a subject, no supporting cluster, so the engine has no reason to treat the site as an authority. Fix: topic and entity mapping, then a connected set of pages with deliberate internal links.
Content paraphrases what is already on the web, so there is nothing new to cite. Fix: surface the methodology, observations, data, and decision criteria the business actually has, and write it down.
No outside source confirms the brand’s claims, so engines default to better-corroborated competitors. Fix: a citation opportunity plan built from the sources engines already cite in your category.
Engines cannot tell which entity a page belongs to. Fix: canonical naming, distinct location content, Organization and LocalBusiness schema that reflects visible text, and aligned profiles.
Decisions are made on anecdotes. Fix: a per-platform citation log from a fixed prompt set, Bing’s AI performance report, Search Console, and AI referral tracking, reviewed monthly.
Deliverables are grouped by the layer they serve. Retrieval work is done by the same team that performs SEO repair and WordPress error repair, so technical blockers are fixed rather than reported.
The evaluation works through the three layers in order and stops to fix retrieval problems before scoring anything above them. The output is a written findings document with a prioritized roadmap.
Six stages, layer by layer. Content is not touched until the engines can reliably retrieve it.
Run the prompt set on every platform and record which sources are cited, including competitors’. Capture Search Console and Bing data. This is the comparison point for everything after.
Fix crawl blocks, rendering gaps, duplicate URLs, and speed problems. Verify that Google, Bing, and AI crawlers return complete text for every page you want cited.
Decide which questions the business should be the reference for, group them into a cluster, and define the entity facts every page must state the same way.
Restructure core pages so each section makes one specific, verifiable point with its evidence beside it. Add the first-party methodology, data, and criteria only your business has.
Pursue the reviews, listings, associations, and editorial mentions that engines already cite for competitors, so your pages have outside support.
Re-run the prompt set monthly, compare with Bing’s AI performance data and referral traffic, and move effort toward the pages and topics that are gaining citations.
Most GEO advice online is about content. Our starting point is different because of where our clients come from: sites we were hired to repair. Three principles follow.
Retrieval failures masquerade as content failures. A page that a generative engine never fetched will never be cited, no matter how well it is written. Before any passage is rewritten we confirm, with logged fetch tests, that Google, Bing, OpenAI, and Perplexity crawlers all receive the full text. A meaningful share of “our content is not cited” cases end here.
Specificity is the citation currency. Engines cite passages that make a concrete, checkable claim: a process with named steps, a number with a source, a limitation stated plainly. “Industry-leading solutions” is never cited. We rewrite toward statements a careful editor could verify, and we put the evidence in the same section rather than three scrolls away.
Corroboration is planned, not hoped for. Competitor citation analysis shows exactly which outside sources engines rely on in a category. Those become the reference targets, in priority order, instead of a generic link-building list.
What we avoid: chasing every new “AI markup” trend, adding llms.txt as if it were a ranking signal, adding schema unsupported by visible content, and promising citations. Our guide to GEO in 2025 and beyond expands on the reasoning.
They are layers of one practice, not alternatives. This is where each one does its work.
| Area | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Rank pages as links | Provide the direct answer to a specific question | Be the retrieved, trusted, cited source in a composed answer |
| Where it matters | Classic results, local packs | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice, AI answers | AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity |
| Typical work | Technical fixes, keyword pages, links | Question research, concise answers, clear structure | Retrieval checks, verifiable passages, entity consistency, corroboration |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks | Feature ownership, answer accuracy | Citations per platform, Bing AI data, AI referrals |
| Best use case | Winning keyword rankings | Owning specific questions | Becoming the reference in a topic or category |
| Limitations | Rankings do not guarantee citations | Not every query is a question | No control over engine outputs; results vary by query, user, and model |
Situation. A firm with a large library of practice-area articles ranks on page one for many of them, yet AI Overviews and Perplexity cite a legal directory and a national competitor when users ask how a specific type of claim works in its state.
Likely findings. Articles written as long narratives with no standalone, verifiable statements; attorneys named inconsistently across the site, the state bar listing, and directories; no Bing verification; a CDN rule throttling unknown crawlers.
Sequence. Confirm crawler access and verify Bing (week 1). Fix attorney and firm entity consistency; add Person and LegalService schema that matches the pages (weeks 1 to 3). Restructure the ten highest-value articles into sections that each state one specific point with its statutory or procedural basis beside it (weeks 2 to 6). Map the cluster and add internal links. Pursue the two bar-association and one editorial source the engines already cite (ongoing).
Measurement. Citations per platform from a 25-prompt set, Bing AI performance data, Search Console. This is the structure of the work; outcomes vary and are not guaranteed.
We can run the citation benchmark, check whether your pages are even being retrieved, and show you what the cited competitors have that you do not, before recommending anything.

GEO is a strategy for improving a website’s and brand’s ability to be discovered, understood, grounded, and cited by generative search systems that compose answers from retrieved sources, such as Google AI Overviews, Copilot, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
SEO earns a ranked link; GEO earns a citation inside a composed answer. GEO depends on SEO, because engines retrieve from web indexes, and adds passage clarity, entity consistency, and outside corroboration on top.
No. Every generative engine relies on crawled, indexed web content. A page that is not crawlable and indexable cannot be cited. GEO extends SEO; it does not replace it.
AEO focuses on giving a direct, concise answer to a specific question, for search features and AI responses. GEO focuses on being the trusted source an engine builds a broader answer from. Most businesses need both; see our Answer Engine Optimization service.
No. No agency controls which sources a generative engine cites, and citations vary by query, user, location, and model version. We measure citations against a baseline and report changes; we do not promise them.
Content that makes specific, verifiable statements with evidence nearby, comes from a consistently identified entity, and is corroborated by reputable outside sources. Generic, promotional, or paraphrased content is rarely cited.
Accurate structured data helps engines understand a page and its entity; it does not cause citations, and Google states no special markup is required for AI features. We use Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, and Person schema only where the visible content supports it.
Through a fixed prompt set re-run monthly on each platform with cited sources logged, Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI performance data, Google Search Console, and AI referral sessions in analytics. Where a platform provides no data, we document manual tests as observations rather than rankings.
Retrieval fixes take effect within days of a re-crawl. Content restructuring and corroboration take weeks to months to influence citations, depending on competition and how much authority the site already has. Timelines are estimates, not guarantees.
Begin with the AI Visibility Audit, which establishes which sources are cited today and whether your pages are being retrieved at all. If a single platform is the priority, ChatGPT SEO or Google AI Optimization may be more direct.
