The Ultimate Google Business Profile Checklist for Medical Clinics

The Ultimate Google Business Profile Checklist for Medical Clinics

A medical clinic’s Google Business Profile ranks in the map pack when Google sees it as relevant, close and prominent. That means a precise primary category, complete and verified details that match your website and every directory, real photos, steady reviews and a separate profile for each location and eligible practitioner.

Why Your Google Business Profile Matters in 2027

In rater8’s 2026 survey of 992 patients, 43% named insurance websites and directories and 40% named review sites as influences when choosing a new doctor, and 13% said the local map pack is the part of Google they trust most. Your Google Business Profile feeds all of these: Google Maps, the map pack, AI Overviews and the AI assistants that pull practice facts from Google.

Google says local results are ranked on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You can’t move your building, but you control the other two.

Setup Rules for Medical Practices

1. Choose the most precise primary category

Practice typeWeak primary categoryStrong primary category
Digestive disease clinicDoctorGastroenterologist
Heart and vascular groupMedical clinicCardiologist
Family dental officeDental clinicDentist (with Cosmetic dentist, Emergency dental service as secondary where true)
Walk-in clinicMedical clinicUrgent care center
Freestanding ERHospitalEmergency room

Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely provide at that location. Extra categories that don’t match your website dilute relevance.

2. Follow the healthcare naming and practitioner rules

  • Business name: your real-world practice name only. Adding “Best”, a city or keywords breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
  • Practitioner profiles: Google allows individual profiles for public-facing practitioners such as physicians and dentists. In a multi-doctor practice, the practice gets its own profile and each eligible doctor can have one.
  • Solo practices: Google recommends a single profile, named in the format “Practice Name: Dr. Full Name”.
  • Departed doctors: mark their profile as moved or request removal so patients aren’t sent to someone who no longer practices there.

3. Complete every field

FieldBest practice
AddressExact USPS format with suite, identical to the website footer
PhoneLocal primary number; call-tracking numbers as additional numbers only
WebsiteThe location page for that clinic, not just the homepage, for multi-location practices
HoursRegular, holiday and special hours (lab, walk-in, telehealth)
ServicesEach real service with a short, plain-language description
AttributesAccessibility, languages, online appointments, telehealth
Appointment linkDirect booking page, not a generic contact page
Description750 characters max; who you are, what you treat, where; no links or promotions

NAP Consistency Across Health Directories

Name, address and phone (NAP) must match everywhere. AI assistants compare these sources; conflicting data makes them less confident about your practice.

DirectoryWhy it matters
Google Business ProfileMaps, map pack, AI Overviews
Apple Business ConnectApple Maps and Siri on every iPhone
Bing PlacesBing, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT search results
Payer directories (each insurer)43% of patients cite insurer sites and directories
Healthgrades, WebMD, Vitals, ZocdocHealth-specific review and provider data
NPPES (NPI registry)Source many directories copy provider data from

Workflow: fix your website and Google Business Profile first as the single source of truth, then correct Apple, Bing, the NPI record, every payer directory and the health sites to match. Recheck quarterly and whenever a doctor joins, leaves or a phone number changes.

Photos: What Works, and the Geotagging Myth

  • Upload real photos: building exterior and entrance (helps patients find you), reception, treatment rooms, team and physicians.
  • Refresh regularly: a few new photos each month signals an active practice.
  • Skip stock images and anything showing patients without written consent.
  • Don’t bother geotagging: Google strips location data (EXIF) from uploaded photos, and tests by Whitespark and others found no ranking effect from geotagged images.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) & Direct Answers

Why is my medical clinic not showing up in the local Google Map Pack?

Google ranks the map pack on relevance, distance and prominence. Clinics usually miss it because of a vague primary category, an incomplete or unverified profile, details that don’t match the website, few recent reviews, or simply being farther from the searcher than competitors.

  1. Confirm the profile is verified and not suspended.
  2. Switch to the most precise primary category.
  3. Match name, address, phone and hours to your website exactly.
  4. Add services, attributes, photos and an appointment link.
  5. Build a steady flow of recent reviews and respond to them.

How do inconsistent directory listings hurt my clinic’s chances in AI search?

AI assistants cross-check your Google Business Profile, website, insurer directories and health sites. When the address, phone, hours or physician list conflict, they may skip your practice, hedge their answer or repeat the wrong details, and patients lose trust when they call a wrong number.

  • Lower confidence: conflicting facts make AI less likely to recommend you.
  • Wrong answers: AI can repeat an old address or phone number.
  • Lost patients: a wrong number or departed doctor ends the booking.
  • Fix: one source of truth, then align every directory to it.
